It took the famous British naval commander Cochrane nearly a year to travel from England around Cape Horn to Asia around 1800. It took us about 22 hours. We left Minneapolis Tuesday at 1 pm and arrived Wednesday at nearly midnight (including a 13 hour time difference!). And Cochrane (who was popularized as Jack Aubrey in the Master and Commander novels) saw a lot more variety on his way.
Our stop in Tokya at Norita airport could have easily been SF or Detroit except for the signs. And the Bangkok airport wasn't too far from 'global', although there were a few interesting 'tells', including the Thai greetings (palms pressed together under the chin with a bow).
Bangkok is an international city, we'll start seeing more of the real Asia as we go further into the trip. We're now staying at the Royal Orchid Sheraton, a great hotel located on the main river -- an indulgence to compensate for the trials of travel.
